Workshops & Events

Karen Smart

Students of iconography are now blessed to have a variety of workshops, teachers and price points from which to choose. I put together a list of things to consider:

  1. Who is teaching the class? Are they a master iconographer affiliated with a reputable school? If not a master, how long have they been an iconographer/teacher? Choose someone whose style you admire.
  2. How many hours of actual instruction with the instructor present will you receive? This is probably one of the most important considerations in order to compare apples to apples. Example: 2 teachers may offer a 6 day workshop from 9-5. One teacher may leave at 5 but allow students to remain in studio to catch up for the day. The other teacher may stay well past 5 in order to ensure all students are caught up for the day.
  3. What is the maximum number of students? This too greatly affects the amount of individual attention you will receive. Personally, I feel there should be no more than 6-8 students per instructor. A very experienced instructor may be comfortable with more.
  4. What materials are included? Specifically what type of board & what size? There is a huge difference in quality between a traditional handmade icon board and the mdf type boards available at any art supply store. A quality board is the foundation of quality results.
  5. Some workshops include room and board or meals only, some do not. This cost should be factored in.
  6. Students now have the option of online learning. This can be very cost effective and still a good way to learn. Usually these type of classes are only for students experienced with a particular teacher's method. Is the class recorded? How long do you have access to the recording? Is there a way to receive critique from the teacher? Is that extra?

In conclusion, when choosing a workshop be sure you are comparing apples to apples, ask a lot of questions and if possible ask a previous student about their experience. Happy painting!
